Shawl Weaving Artisan - Wet Processing

Practice of desizing the yarn/ fabric by using desizing method

Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• desizing the yarn / fabric by using desizing method.

Requirements
Tools/equipment’s/Instruments
• Gas stove - 1 No. • Glass /metal stirring rods - 1 No.
• Stainless steel beaker - 1 No. • Protective Gloves - 1 Set.
• Soda ash (Na CO ) - as reqd. Materials

• Acetic acid (CH COOH) - as reqd. • Wool fabric sized - as reqd.

• Washing and soaping agent - as reqd. • Wool yarn hanks - as reqd.
• Lab thermometer - 1 No.
PROCEDURE

TASK 1: Desizing of wool fabric
1 Take a fabric with sizing in it. Fig 2
2 Weigh the fabric to determine the amount of soda
ash and acetic acid required.
3 Then Mix 2-5% soda ash (Na CO ) with hot water

(around 40°C to 50°C) in a beaker.
4 Stir the solution until the sodium carbonate is fully
dissolved.
5 Then put the wool fabric in the solution and ensure
the fabric is fully covered by the solution. (Fig 1)

10 Then mix 1-2% acetic acid (CH3COOH) with water
and immerse the wool fabric in the solution.
11 Let the fabric soak in the solution for 10-15 minutes.
12 Then rinse the wool fabric thoroughly with cold water
to remove any remaining neutralizing solution.
13 Gently squeeze out excess water from the fabric.

14 Then dry the fabric in the room temperature.

6 Let it soak for 30-60 minutes.
7 Gently stir the fabric with the help of stirring rods
in every 10-15 minutes to ensure even treatment.
(Fig 2)
8 Now take the fabric out from the beaker and rinse
thoroughly with cold water to remove any remaining
alkaline solution.
9 Repeat the rinsing process until the water runs clear.

TASK 2: Desizing of wool yarn
Follow the procedure from 1-14 in TASK 1 for yarn Safety precautions
desizing. • Wear protective gloves when handling soda ash and
acetic acid.
• Ensure good ventilation when working with these
chemicals.
